ENGLISH:

Recently, I attended a showing of Loin des Hommes (Far From Men), a French film about the Algerian independence war, at the Tournées French Film Festival at the University of Memphis. The film was extraordinary, and reminded me of how fortunate it is to be in a city like Memphis, where cultural events like the festival are prevalent.

The film is based on a short story by Albert Camus. The film, a drama, follows the journey of two men forced to travel across the Atlas mountains in Algeria. Viggo Mortensen (known for playing Aragorn in Lord of the Rings) plays a schoolteacher-turned-bodyguard and Reda Kateb plays an Algerian man fearing his impending execution. The film addresses themes of honor and justice, and addresses a time period whose conflicts remain politically relevant today. In the midst of the Algerian independence war, with Algerians fighting for decolonization against the French, Mortensen and Kateb’s characters push on towards their uncertain fate — as Kateb’s character is headed towards his possible execution. Their performances both sweep the audience into mid-20th century Algeria.

Supported by L’Alliance Française of Memphis, the festival featured six French films open to the public.

Make sure to check next year for the festival, and attend a foreign language film festival sometime this year!
