Mahrez scores twice as Man City blanks Chelsea in FA Cup play

Sports Desk, Jan 8 (EFE).- Manchester City drubbed Chelsea 4-0 in the third round of FA Cup play at Etihad Stadium in London on Sunday, thus possibly setting up an encounter with Arsenal, which currently is on top of the Premier League table.

It was City’s second win over Chelsea in the past week, having blanked the side 1-0 in Premier League play at Stamford Bridge last Thursday.

It was Riyad Mahrez who knocked in the first tally in the 23rd minute on a free kick, followed by Julian Alvarez’s penalty kick goal in minute 30 and Phil Foden’s nice shot into the twine eight minutes later, thus giving Pep Guardiola’s men a 3-0 lead at the intermission.

Graham Potter’s Chelsea was just not up to snuff in the first half on Sunday and things didn’t get any better after the break, with play settling down but Mahrez waiting until the 85th minute to notch the final goal on a penalty kick after Kalidou Koulibaly fouled Foden inside the area.

In the fourth round of FA Cup play, the Sky Blues will next go up against the winner of the Arsenal-Oxford United elimination match, the latter a League One team, on Monday.

Lineups:

Manchester City: Ortega; Walker, Akanji, Laporte, Gomez (Cancelo, m.58); Silva (Lewis, m.86), Rodri (Phillips, m.58), Palmer; Mahrez, Alvarez and Foden.

Chelsea: Kepa; Humphreys, Koulibaly, Chalobah, Hall; Kovacic (Fofana, m.46), Jorginho (Azpilicueta, m.63), Mount (Chukwemeka, m.73); Ziyech (Hutchinson, m.63), Havertz (Zakaria, m.46) and Gallagher.
