Tokyo reports record-high 888 new Covid-19 cases

Tokyo, Dec 24 (efe-epa).- The Japanese capital on Thursday reported a record 888 cases of daily coronavirus infection as the country battles the third wave of Covid-19 since November.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the previous record of daily coronavirus numbers was 821, marked a week ago.

With this, the total number of patients who have tested positive in Tokyo now stands at 54,018.

The tally of infections in the capital recorded in December has surpassed the 12,000-mark, an all-time monthly high, beating the previous record of 9,857 cases in November.

Japan health authorities on Wednesday confirmed 3,271 coronavirus cases, another daily record. The nation’s death toll also marked a single-day high of 56, as Tokyo and several other areas continued to see a spike in infections.

Another high of infections across Japan was recorded the day before, with 3,271 cases and 46 fatalities.

The total number of infections in the country has crossed 207,000, with 3,082 deaths.

The number includes 712 patients from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

The ship arrived at the port of Yokohama last February, with more than 3,000 people on board.

The country of 126 million people registered the first coronavirus case on Jan.16 of a Chinese citizen who had visited Wuhan, where the virus was first detected.

Tokyo, the worst-affected region in the country by the virus, has been at the highest health alert level since last week when the number of new cases spiked to a record 822 patients.

The government issued the alert on the recommendations of a panel of experts.

There were fears of a medical system crisis due to the growing number of patients.

The authorities in the capital have recommended that citizens must avoid unnecessary outings and also refrain from attending company dinners and traditional family gatherings during the New Year holidays.

Tokyo and the rest of the country entered a state of health emergency on April 7, due to the fast outbreak of the pandemic.

The emergency measure ended on May 25 amid diminishing fears about a medical system collapse.

The country suffered a second wave of Covid-19 in August. But the third has been worse and has generated a higher number of people infected by the pandemic. EFE
