Kazakh parliament abolishes privileges for the first president and his family

Astana, Jan 13 (EFE).- Kazakhstan’s parliament on Friday unanimously repealed in a joint session of its two chambers a law granting a series of privileges to the country’s first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and his family.

The legislature’s decision came after the Constitutional Court ruled on Tuesday that the country’s new Constitution, adopted on June 5, 2022, “does not provide legal grounds” for the law “on the First President of Kazakhstan” to remain in force.

The repealed law granted Nazarbayev the status of “Elbasy” (leader of the nation), as well as the presidency for life of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, from which the former president resigned in April 2021, in addition to other privileges.

However, Nazarbayev, who ruled the country for 30 years and resigned in March 2019, will not lose the immunity guaranteed by his status as former president, but members of his family are to be deprived of such protection. EFE
