Dovbyk rises to the occasion for Ukraine against Sweden

Sports Desk, Jun 29 (EFE).- Ukraine triumphed 2-1 over Sweden Tuesday on Artem Dovbyk’s goal in the 121st minute of the Euro 2020 knockout stage clash at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Making their first-ever appearance in the round of 16, Ukraine took the lead in the 27th minute with a goal by Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Emil Forsberg, Sweden’s best attacking player during the tournament, equalized in the 43rd minute, but was denied twice in the second half – by the post and the crossbar, respectively, on chances to put the Scandinavians ahead.

Ukraine’s Serhiy Sydorchuk also hit the post and Alexander Isak fired wide on an opportunity for the Swedes, forcing the match into extra time.

Sweden seemed to have more ambition, but the contest was turned on its head in the 99th minute when Marcus Danielson was sent off with a straight red card for a studs-out challenge that forced Ukraine’s Artem Besyedin to leave the pitch.

The sides remained deadlocked as they entered stoppage time and the match looked to be headed for penalties until a great ball from Zinchenko found Dovbyk in front of goal and the forward put it past Robin Olsen to put Ukraine in the semifinals, where they will face England. EFE
