Pre-emptive evacuations begin as volcano stirs on Spain’s La Palma

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, Sep 19 (EFE).- Authorities in Spain’s Canary Islands on Sunday began the process of evacuating people with reduced mobility ahead of a possible volcanic eruption on La Palma.

La Palma is located in the northwest of the Spanish archipelago, which is also home to popular tourist destinations Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.

The island has been shuddered by a raft tremors that scientists say could point to an imminent volcanic eruption.

The local scientific committee for volcano risk management, Pevolca, on Sunday said it could not provide an estimated time for a possible eruption at the Teneguía volcanic zone.

As well as seismic tremors, shudders and vibrations, deformations have formed on the land near the volcano, indicating the presence of magma below the surface.

Pevolca warned that stronger tremors, capable of damaging infrastructure, could occur.

The last major volcanic eruption in the Canary Islands took place underwater off the coast of El Hierro between 2011-12.EFE
