Spain’s PM offers support to Libya in achieving stability

Tripoli, Jun 3 (EFE).- Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met his Libyan counterpart Abdulhamid Dbeibeh in the capital Tripoli on Thursday and offered his nation’s support in achieving stability in the North African country.

Sanchez’s comments came ahead of the reopening event of the Spanish embassy after a closure that lasted nearly seven years when Libya descended into a civil conflict.

In a show of support for Libya’s new unity government, Sanchez traveled to Tripoli along with Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya and a group of businesspeople with investment plans.

Sanchez pledged 50,000 euros ($60,000) for demining activities and 100,000 euros for the preparation of national elections, scheduled for December this year.

The premier also underlined the importance of the role Spanish companies could play in rebuilding the country.

Sanchez was accompanied by the CEO of Spanish oil company Repsol, which has been operating in Libya for years, as well as representatives from other companies.

Both leaders signed eight collaboration agreements on agriculture, customs, higher education, political consultations, diplomatic institutions, and chambers of commerce.

Sanchez will later meet chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed al-Menfi.

In March, a transitional unity government was appointed in Libya in a major step toward peace in the country that has been gripped by conflict for a decade.

The transitional government replaced the United Nations-backed Government of National Accord, which ruled Tripoli and western areas, and a rival government linked to warlord Khalifa Haftar in eastern Libya.
