Jubilee Schools Saved but Changed with SCS Charter Agreement

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — Nueve escuelas autónomas que fueron recientemente aprobadas darán ahora a los padres del condado de Shelby más control sobre la educación de sus hijos.

En junio, las Escuelas del Condado de Shelby rechazaron una propuesta que habría salvado a las Escuelas Católicas Jubilee (Jubilee Catholic Schools), las cuales habían anunciado en enero que cerrarían debido a problemas financieros.

Dos meses después, SCS cambió de opinión y aprobó el plan para convertir a las Escuelas Católicas Jubilee en escuelas chárter en el distrito de SCS. Ahora, el plan creará nueve escuelas chárter nuevas (seis son de Jubilee).

“Es grandioso”, dijo el presidente de Christian Brothers University, John Smarrelli. “Prometimos a la Junta Escolar con mucha firmeza que lo que haríamos sería crear una experiencia educativa de mayor calidad para esos estudiantes, así que aplaudo y agradezco a la Junta Escolar por creer en nosotros. Es inusual que la Junta Escolar del distrito apruebe estas seis escuelas”.

Smarrelli dice que gracias a un acuerdo con la diócesis, las nuevas Escuelas Comunitarias Compass estarán en los mismos edificios utilizados anteriormente por las Escuelas Católicas Jubilee.

El mismo director ejecutivo que dirige Jubilee también supervisará las nuevas escuelas.

Pero habrá algunas grandes diferencias.

Por un lado, las nuevas escuelas chárter no serán religiosas ni mencionarán la religión de ninguna manera. Las nuevas escuelas también tendrán un día escolar más largo.

“Realmente necesitamos educar a nuestros niños. Necesitamos ofrecerles oportunidades para obtener una educación de alta calidad en el condado de Shelby, y ese es el propósito de esta organización”, dijo Smarrelli.

Las nuevas escuelas chárter abrirán para el año escolar 2019-20.

Si todas las escuelas chárter actuales permanecen abiertas el próximo año, el condado de Shelby tendrá un total de 63 escuelas autónomas.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — Nine newly approved charter schools will give Shelby County parents more control over their child’s education.

In June, Shelby County Schools rejected a proposal that would’ve saved Jubilee Catholic Schools, which announced in January it would close due to funding challenges.

Two months later, SCS changed its mind and approved the plan to turn Jubilee Catholic Schools into charter schools in the SCS district. The plan creates nine new charter schools.

“It’s a big deal. It’s a huge deal,” Christian Brothers University President John Smarrelli said. “We promised the school board very strongly that what we would do was create a higher quality educational experience for those students, and I applaud and thank the school board for believing us. This is unusual for the school board to approve these six schools.”

Smarrelli says thanks to an agreement with the diocese, the new Compass Community Schools will be in the same buildings previously used by Jubilee Catholic Schools.

The same executive director running Jubilee will also oversee the new schools.

But there will be some big differences.

For one, the new charter schools will not be religious or mention religion in any way. The new schools will also have a longer school day.

“We really need to educate our children. We need to offer them opportunities in order to get a high-quality education in Shelby County, and that’s the purpose of this organization,” Smarrelli said.

The new charter schools will open for the 2019-20 school year.

If all the current charter schools remain open next year, Shelby County will have a total of 63 charter schools.
