Man sets himself on fire outside Moroccan consulate in Madrid

Madrid, Feb 7 (EFE).- A 45-year-old Moroccan national set himself on fire on Tuesday outside the Moroccan consulate in Madrid, Spanish police said.

He was treated at the scene with severe burns on 25% of his body before being transferred to hospital, where his condition is serious.

Witnesses who called the emergency services at around midday said the man had left the consulate visibly angry before dousing himself in liquid from a canister he had in his coat and setting himself on fire with a lighter.

Some onlookers intervened to remove the man’s burning clothes, while another witness used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.

The Moroccan Embassy in Spain said it had no further information, pending further details of the incident. EFE
