2 dead, 1 arrested in Taliban operation against IS in Afghan capital

Kabul, Feb 27 (EFE).- At least two alleged members of the Islamic State (IS) terror group were killed and one was arrested in an operation by the Taliban in Kabul, an official said Monday.

The operation took place on Sunday night and security forces recovered firearms and explosives, the source said, adding that the extremist group had plans to carry out a sabotage mission.

“In Khair Khana area of Kabul city, a successful operation (was) conducted on a hideout of Daesh(IS), as result; two Daesh killed and one another arrested,” Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid tweeted.

This was the second such operation in less than a month in the Afghan capital, after one on Feb.13, in which at least two suspected IS members died and one was captured.

Since the Taliban’s return to power a year and a half ago, dozens of suspected IS members have been killed in operations carried out by the security forces.

In recent months, the IS has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks, including a bomb attack on Jan.11 in front of the Foreign Ministry in Kabul, in which at least 5 people were killed and another 40 were injured.

The fundamentalists have a strong rivalry with the terror group, which has emerged as one of the main security threats in Afghanistan after the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. EFE
