Japan Airlines appoints female former flight attendant as new president

Tokyo, Jan 17 (EFE).- Japan Airlines announced Wednesday the appointment of a female president for the first time in its history.

Mitsuko Tottori, 59, is a former flight attendant and will replace current President Yuji Akasaka at the helm of Japan’s flag carrier.

“I would like this appointment to serve those women who are looking for a better future in their career and to give them encouragement and courage in their next steps,” Tottori said at a press conference, where Akasaka – who will be moved to an honorary position – was also present.

Tottori, who has years of experience as a flight attendant and worked as a cabin crew manager and until now, served as the airline’s customer service director.

“I have been supported by many people and I hope to help create a company where everyone can get the most out of it,” the new president said.

Akasaka spoke of Tottori’s experience with clients and her knowledge of security as some of the capabilities that make her suitable for the job.

The change in management comes after the airline was involved in an incident with a Japanese Coast Guard plane at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Jan. 2, an event that stood out for the prompt action of the crew aboard the commercial aircraft to evacuate passengers.

The 379 occupants of their commercial flight were evacuated, although 14 of them were injured, while only the captain survived among the six people aboard the coast guard plane, though he suffered severe injuries. EFE
