Spain exhibition explores Picasso’s relationship with Spanish tradition

Malaga, Spain, Feb 21 (EFE).- Spanish painter Pablo Picasso was famous for pushing artistic boundaries but a new exhibition at the Picasso museum in Malaga shows how the painter’s break from tradition came from a deep understanding of it.

Dozens of works by Picasso, who was born in Malaga, will be showcased alongside seven artworks by traditional Spanish artists including El Greco, Francisco Pacheco, Giovanni Battista Caracciolo and Francisco de Zurbarán.

The exhibition ‘Face to Face. Picasso and the old masters’ offers visitors a direct comparison of Picasso and traditional artists.

“Picasso approaches tradition in a dynamic way, not to copy it or abide by it, but to learn its values, its technique and its sensitivity in order to do his work,” the museum’s artistic director, Jose Lebrero, said.

While Picasso spent most of his working life in Paris, his art had Spanish roots, according to the exhibition curator, Michael Fitzgerald.

“Picasso had a deep relationship with the old masters,” says Fitzgerald. EFE
