Israel remembers Covid victims with scores of empty chairs

Jerusalem, Sep 7 (efe-epa).- More than 1,000 empty chairs were positioned in central Tel Aviv on Monday to remember Israel’s Covid-19 victims.

It came amid calls for government accountability and demands for a commission of inquiry into alleged mismanagement of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

A total of 1,119 chairs were positioned in the city’s Rabin Square, one for each person who has been officially declared to have died from the virus.

Each one bore a number, the name of the town where the person lived and a single rose.

The event was organized by the grassroots political movement Standing Together which has criticized the Israeli government for how it has handled the crisis.

It marked the start of a campaign calling for a committee to examine the “inadequate” governmental reaction to the outbreak.

Israel has been gripped by an unstoppable second wave of contagion that it has not been able to contain.

Standing Together has launched an online petition with its demand that had been signed by more than 1,300 people.

It is also calling for more economic support for citizens and increased social policies that put an end to the neoliberal model of the right-wing coalition government led by Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The government not only mismanaged the health aspects of the crisis but also the social and economic ones,” a Standing Together spokesperson said.
