Medvedev, Rublev into French Open 4th round

Sports Desk, May 28 (EFE).- Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev on Saturday advanced into the French Open fourth round at the expense of Miomir Kecmanovic and Cristian Garin respectively.

The second seed Medvedev defeated Serbia’s Kecmanovic 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 48 minutes, to move a win away from equaling his best French Open run, which came last year.

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, hold off two break points he faced throughout the match and managed to claim five service breaks which proved decisive.

Next up for Medvedev, who is involved in a three-way battle with Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev for the ATP rankings top spot held currently by the Serb, will take either Gilles Simon or 20th seed Marin Cilic.

His fellow Russian Rublev, seeded No. 7, had to sweat more to get rid of Garin, who fell short of his best French Open campaign which was ended by Medvedev last year in the last-16.

Rublev seemed to be on his way to an easy victory as he clinched the first set, but the Chilean put up a fight, claiming the second set.

Although the Russian regained the lead in the third set, he had to rally from a double break in the fourth to seal a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 victory in three hours and nine minutes.

Making his only second French Open fourth-round appearance in his fourth main draw participation, Rublev will play Italy’s Jannik Sinner, the 11th seed, who prevailed in straight sets over Mackenzie McDonald. EFE
