Rashford shines as Manchester United advance in FA Cup

Sports Desk, Jan 6 (EFE).- Marcus Rashford was involved in all of Manchester United’s goals in Friday’s 3-1 victory over Everton in the third round of the FA Cup.

The England striker assisted on the opener, was the last Red Devil to touch the ball on the own goal that made it 2-1 and converted a penalty in stoppage time to put his team in the round-of-16 and eliminate the Toffees.

United extended their post-World Cup winning streak to five, while a draw with Manchester City remains Everton’s best result since the extended international break.

The hosts started in high gear and the crowd at Old Trafford had to wait only until the 4th minute to cheer a goal. Rashford made a rush down the left side and sent the ball across the face of goal for the unmarked Antony to hammer home from the far post.

United created three more chances before Everton got their first sniff of goal, a Demarai Gray effort that hit the post in the 13th minute.

Seconds later, a mistake by goalkeeper David de Gea allowed Conor Coady to equalize for the Toffees.

At the other end, Jordan Pickford made stops against Anthony Martial and England teammate Rashford before United’s Christian Eriksen fired over the cross-bar and the sides went to the break deadlocked at 1-1.

Everton lost Alex Iwobi to an injury five minutes into the second half and things got even worse for the visitors in the 52nd minute with an own goal by Coady as he tried to deal with a ball from Rashford.

Pickford leapt to tip a Bruno Fernandes blast over the cross-bar in the 66th minute to keep Everton’s hopes alive.

The Toffees looked to have pulled level with a goal in the 74th by sub Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but VAR detected that Seamus Coleman was offside and they continued to trail 2-1.

Rashford tested Pickford again with a free kick in the 89th and De Gea denied Gray in the first minute of stoppage time.

United’s Alejandro Garnacho won a penalty in the 95th and Rashford converted to seal the victory. EFE apa/dr
