A ellos los acompañan Cake, The Flaming Lips, Ludacris, Juicy J, Margo Price, Chevelle, Calexico, Marcia Ball, Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, Star & Micey, Reba Russell, Wilderado, Flor, MisterWives, Vance Joy, Third Eye Blind, Gov’t Mule, David Byrne, Kaleo y muchos más.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — After a resounding success in 2017, the Memphis in May Organization is ready to begin its famous international festival. It is expected that hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world will come this year to enjoy this great event, thus surpassing the attendance record they had last year.

Memphis in May is known for being one of the best of its kind worldwide. Featuring arts, music, culture and gastronomy, Memphis in May seeks to promote and celebrate the cultural heritage of Memphis, foster the local economic growth, and raise international awareness through education. The annual festival also has the tradition of celebrating a different country every year, and this time the honoree is the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic is the twelfth European country to be honored in the festival’s history, and its selection by Memphis in May International Festival coincides with their celebration of 100 years as an independent nation, beginning as Czechoslovakia in 1918.

“We are proud to honor such an economically strong and culturally rich country,” stated James L. Holt, President and CEO of Memphis in May International Festival.

Hynek Kmoníček, Czech Republic’s Ambassador to the United States said, “I am delighted that the Memphis in May International Festival has chosen to highlight the vibrancy of the Czech Republic in 2018, bringing exceptional talent from the heart of Europe, accentuating the many feats of my homeland, and simultaneously coinciding with celebrations surrounding the 100 years of Czech independence.”

Chef Zdenek Pohlreich

The Czech Republic, also known as “The Jewel of Europe,” is a nation with 10 million inhabitants. It is situated in the middle of Europe, with Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Poland as its neighbors. Known for its rich historical and cultural heritage, this country has more than 2,000 castles, palaces and fortresses. The Czech Republic resonates with beautiful landscapes, including its imposing mountains on the border, deep forests, refreshing lakes, as well as architectural and urban masterpieces. Its capital, Prague, is distinguished by its impressive architecture and friendly people; it is also the fifth most visited city in Europe.

The late twentieth century saw the Czech Republic rise as one of the youngest and strongest members of today’s European Union and NATO. Thanks to the fact that it has the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union, the Czech Republic’s stable economy is supported by robust exports, mainly beers – its beer brewing tradition dates back to the 13th century – and in the automotive and technology sectors.

“The Czech Republic is a beautiful and progressive country with a robust economy,” said Kristen Wright, Memphis in May Board Chair and Senior Vice President/General Counsel of AutoZone Corporation. “The cross-cultural experiences that the Memphis in May International Festival provides our citizens and the Czechs are what make this month-long celebration unique and important to our city.”

As part of the celebration throughout the month of May, the organizers of Memphis in May have been commissioned to bring to the city one of the best chefs in the Czech Republic, as well as one of its most important musicians: Chef Zdenek Pohlreich and Dan Bárta.

Some of the exquisite dishes made by the famous Czech chef can be tasted on Thursday, May 10, at the Orpheum Theatre, just before the performance of the world-renowned Epoque Quartet. Chef Pohlreich will also assist in the preparation of the menu that will be served at the Memphis in May International Gala, which will be held on May 11 at the Peabody Hotel, as well as the menu that will be offered on May 12 at the Chez Phillippe restaurant.

In addition to celebrating the Czech Republic as such, including its culture and music, during the Memphis in May International Week (May 7-13), there will be other events that are equally iconic: the Beale Street Music Festival, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the Great American River Run, and 901 Fest.

Dan Bárta and Illustratosphere

The Beale Street Music Festival, ranked as one of the best in the U.S., is a series of outdoor concerts that lasts three days at Tom Lee Park (Downtown), along the Mississippi River. This year, it will be from Friday, May 4, to Sunday, May 6.

Among the most famous artists that will be performing this year are: Alanis Morissette, Erykah Badu, Logic, Jack White, Queens of the Stone Age, Odesza, Post Malone, Incubus, and Tyler, The Creator. They are accompanied by Cake, The Flaming Lips, Ludacris, Juicy J, Margo Price, Chevelle, Calexico, Marcia Ball, Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, Star & Micey, Reba Russell, Wilderado, Flor, MisterWives, Vance Joy, Third Eye Blind, Gov’t Mule, David Byrne, Kaleo, and many more.

The local artists and bands that will be performing are: Porcelan, Love Light Orchestra, Ghost Town Blues Band, Earl “the Pearl” Banks, Tav Falco & the Panther Burns, and Chinese Connection Dub Embassy.

The award-winning rock singer Dan Bárta & Illustratosphere will be performing on Saturday, May 5.

“We take great pride in the eclectic mix of artists we present to our patrons and music fans each year,” Holt stated.

Tickets for the Beale Street Music Festival are on sale at www.ticketmaster.com.

The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, meanwhile, will be from May 16 to May 19, and is also one of the most important BBQ contests in the world. Here, thousands of people enjoy a delicious pork barbecue while hundreds of teams compete for the best BBQ trophy. It should be noted that The Latin Porkers will compete again this year, along with the sponsorship of La Prensa Latina, among others.

Regarding the 901Fest, this event will be held on May 26 and will focus primarily on celebrating the culture and heritage of the city of Memphis. It will include local performers on multiple stages, local artists, local vendors, local food and beverages, and local merchants. An airshow will take place as well as a wonderful fireworks show over the Mississippi River. According to Holt, 901Fest highlights the best of Memphis. This will be the third year in a row that 901Fest takes place.

To mark the end of the 42nd annual Memphis in May International Festival, the Great American River Run, which consists of a half marathon and a 5K race, will take place on May 26. Registration costs $40 or $85 per person, depending on the marathon you want to run and the date of registration.
