MEMPHIS, TN (FOX 13) — Shelby County leaders gave an update today on the coronavirus in our community, as well as information about the ongoing fight against racial injustice in our community.
Shelby County Health Department official Bruce Randolph said Shelby County has a total of 5,314 cases of COVID-19, an increase of 190 cases since yesterday.
This is the largest increase we have seen since April 24.
There were four more deaths reported since yesterday, for a total of 113.
Over 2,400 people were tested yesterday, Randolph said.
The positivity rate is currently 6.8 percent, and the fatality rate is 2.1 percent.
Randolph said it is important to wear facial coverings in public and adhere to social distancing.
Randolph said the SCHD is “alarmed” the numbers are increasing.
Randolph said if the numbers continue to increase, the SCHD will “have no choice” but to mandate the wearing of face masks.
Before Shelby County can move to the next phase the numbers must level off and decrease, according to Randolph.
Hours after the news conference, Mayor Jim Strickland officially signed an executive order extending the current phase of Back-to-Business to June 16.
This means entertainment venues like theaters, cinemas, and performing arts centers must remain closed.
Randolph said masks the SCHD had received had been treated with Silvadur, an antimicrobial agent, which is registered as a pesticide.
Randolph said until the health department is sure that Silvadur is not a threat to human health, they will not be distributing the masks.
Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris said this week there will be a surge of COVID-19 testing in correctional facilities.
Harris said every prisoner, officer, and staff member will be offered testing.
Harris said those behind bars must be treated with the same humanity as everyone else.
Harris said the recent murder of George Floyd “tears back the veil of racial injustice.”
Harris said African-American have been too often racially profiled and thrown in handcuffs.
“History has shown we can do unimaginable things in this community and in this country,” Harris said.
We can restore our economy and make a unified effort to combat racial injustice, according to Harris.
People of color are often caught up in the criminal justice system for life, but right now the detention levels in Shelby County are the lowest they have been in years, according to Harris.
