In Easter message, Bidens urge Americans to get vaccinated

Washington, Apr 4 (efe-epa).- In an Easter Sunday message, United States President Joe Biden and first lady, Jill, urged all Americans to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

“The virus is not gone and so many of us still feel the longing and loneliness of distance,” Biden said in a video message, in which he said that most Americans will be separated from family, friends and congregations for a second year.

“Yet as the Gospel of John reminds us, the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it,” said Biden, the second Catholic president after John F. Kennedy.

“We share the sentiments of Pope Francis who said that getting vaccinated is a moral obligation, one that can save your life and the lives of others,” the Democrat leader added.

“By getting vaccinated and encouraging your congregations and your communities to get vaccinated, we not only can beat this virus, we can also hasten the day when we can celebrate the holidays together.”

The first lady said that the traditions of Holy Week “take us on a journey from sorrow to salvation, reminding us that with faith, hope and love, anything is possible.”

“And today as spring returns, we see hope all around us. Families are getting the financial help they need to take a breath once again. Businesses are recovering, and more and more Americans are getting life-saving vaccines,” she noted in reference to the huge stimulus package approved by the Biden government to alleviate the effects of the pandemic and for its vaccination campaign.

The US has accumulated 30,705,525 confirmed cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and 554,994 deaths from Covid-19, according to an independent count from John Hopkins University.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 104.2 million people (31.4 percent of the population) have received at least one dose of the vaccine, of which 59.8 million (18 percent) they are now fully inoculated. EFE-EPA
