Francis asks for peace in Ukraine, hit by a ‘cruel and senseless’ war

Vatican City, Apr 17 (EFE).- Pope Francis on Sunday called for peace in Ukraine, which has been experiencing “a cruel and senseless war”.

After delivering Mass on Easter Sunday in St. Peter’s Square before 50,000 people, the pontiff referred to the “incredulity” the world has been experiencing with this “Easter of war.”

“Let us allow the peace of Christ enter our lives, our homes and our countries!” he added.

“May there be peace in the martyred Ukraine, so harshly tested by the violence and destruction of the cruel and senseless war into which it has been dragged.

“May a new dawn of hope soon dawn on this terrible night of suffering and death,” he said.

The pope also called for governments to “listen to the people’s cry for peace”.

“Listen to that disturbing question that scientists asked themselves almost sixty years ago: Are we going to put an end to the human race or should it resign? humanity to war?”

Pope Francis was referring to the Russell-Einstein manifesto published on July 9, 1955 in which the scientists asked for disarmament amid the nuclear danger derived from the Cold War. EFE
