Memphis International Airport: Striving to Be Your Best Choice

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Tal vez muchos no lo sepan, pero el Aeropuerto Internacional de Memphis se encuentra haciendo una serie de cambios muy significativos para el beneficio de los pasajeros y de la ciudad. Uno de esos cambios, y quizás el más importante, es el proyecto de remodelación del vestíbulo B (Concourse B), el cual se espera que esté listo a principios del año 2021. Otro cambio es que cada vez están agregando más destinos sin escala y líneas aéreas que ofrezcan tarifas mucho más económicas. Además, el aeropuerto en cuestión busca ser más inclusivo, con asistencia bilingüe las 24 horas del día, los siete días de la semana, y un programa de trabajo que invita a las comunidades minoritarias -incluyendo a los empresarios, contratistas y constructores hispanos- a participar en cualquiera de sus licitaciones.
Así lo manifestó el presidente y director ejecutivo de la Autoridad Aeroportuaria de Memphis y del Condado de Shelby, Scott A. Brockman, durante una entrevista exclusiva con La Prensa Latina.
El proyecto en sí del nuevo vestíbulo B, según indicó Brockman, consiste en la adición de pasillos más amplios, áreas de embarque más grandes, techos más altos e iluminación natural (gracias a ventanas de alta tecnología proporcionadas por un fabricante de Olive Branch). El plan consolidará las operaciones de las aerolíneas, tiendas y restaurantes en un mismo lugar.
El proyecto también incluye la eliminación de los extremos del sur de los vestíbulos A y C para permitir el acceso sin obstáculos a los aviones en todo el vestíbulo B.
Otras características de dicho vestíbulo incluyen:
¤ Mejoras sísmicas: el proyecto de modernización le permitirá al MEM (Aeropuerto de Memphis) realizar las actualizaciones sísmicas necesarias en el vestíbulo B. “Una de las razones por las que estamos haciendo esto es porque todas las instalaciones del aeropuerto fueron construidas en un momento en que no había un código sísmico”, dijo Brockman, afirmando a su vez que, de no hacer estas mejoras, “estaríamos corriendo el riesgo de tener problemas mayores si hay un terremoto significativo proveniente de la Falla de New Madrid. Por lo tanto, todo lo que estamos haciendo es también para asegurarnos de que cada una de nuestras instalaciones no sólo sea eficiente y cómoda, sino segura para todos”. Cabe señalar que Memphis está en el perímetro de la falla sísmica de New Madrid.
¤ Una zona de juegos para niños;
¤ Nuevas pasarelas de acceso a los aviones;
¤ Un escenario para música en vivo, en el área de la Rotunda;
¤ Salas de embarque adicionales (sala de confort para las madres y sus bebés, sala para los militares y un salón de espera especialmente diseñado para los niños que son pacientes de los hospitales St. Jude y Le Bonheur);
¤ Más comodidades e instalaciones modernas;
¤ Más asientos (asientos individuales con respaldo alto y respaldo bajo y con mesas);
¤ Estaciones de carga adicionales: cada asiento tendrá un enchufe y puertos de carga USB;
¤ Estaciones de trabajo para personas que necesitan trabajar;
¤ Tiendas al por menor y restaurantes;
¤ Concesiones de alimentos y bebidas;
¤ Pantallas de información de vuelo.
“Todo será absolutamente nuevo en el vestíbulo B, una vez que éste abra”, dijo Brockman. “Queremos proporcionar la mejor experiencia posible para cada persona. Los viajeros que regresen a Memphis se sentirán orgullosos de saber que su aeropuerto es el reflejo de la ciudad que tanto aman… Los viajeros que vengan a Memphis por primera vez experimentarán de inmediato la cultura y personalidad de la ciudad, ya que el aeropuerto combinará un estilo moderno con la hospitalidad del sur”.
Actualmente, el Aeropuerto Internacional de Memphis cuenta con 10 aerolíneas y más de 30 vuelos sin escala a diferentes destinos dentro y fuera del país. También ofrece decenas de vuelos diarios con escala a distintas ciudades.

Vacation Express tendrá vuelos directos y sin escala semanalmente durante el verano entre el Aeropuerto Internacional de Memphis (MEM) y el Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancún (CUN). Los vuelos saldrán los sábados a partir del 25 de mayo y estarán disponibles hasta el 27 de julio.
“Muchas cosas están sucediendo aquí en este momento, no hemos terminado. La modernización del Aeropuerto Internacional de Memphis está en marcha y esa es realmente la primera de lo que yo llamaría tres fases para mejorar, para modernizar verdaderamente todas las instalaciones de pasajeros”, indicó Brockman, agregando que la terminal principal también tendrá la misma modernización sísmica que se ha estado haciendo en el resto del aeropuerto.
Por otro lado, el Aeropuerto Internacional de Memphis es el segundo más importante en el mundo entero, después de Hong Kong (China), en cuanto a manejo y envío de cargamentos, sobre todo porque FedEx tiene su sede principal en Memphis. A nivel nacional, MEM ocupa el primer lugar como aeropuerto de carga por su estratégica situación geográfica.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Many may not know it, but Memphis International Airport is making a wide range of very significant changes for the benefit of passengers and the city. One of those changes, and perhaps the most important one, is the modernization project in Concourse B, which is expected to be completed in early 2021. Another change is that more nonstop flights are being added as well as new airlines that offer much lower rates. In addition, the airport seeks to be more inclusive, with bilingual assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and a Business Diversity Development Program that invites all minority communities – including Hispanic entrepreneurs, contractors and builders – to participate in any of their bids.
This, among other things, is what the President and CEO of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, Scott A. Brockman, stated during an exclusive interview with La Prensa Latina.
According to Brockman, the modernization project consists of the addition of moving walkways, wider corridors, larger boarding areas, higher ceilings, and natural lighting (thanks to high technology windows provided by an Olive Branch manufacturer). The plan will consolidate airline, retail and food and beverage operations in Concourse B.
The project also includes the removal of the south ends of the A and C Concourses to allow for unobstructed access by aircraft to the entire B Concourse.
Other features of the new concourse B are:
¤ Seismic upgrades: the modernization project will allow the MEM (Memphis International Airport) to perform needed seismic upgrades to the B Concourse. “One of the reasons why we are doing this is because all the facilities here were built during a time when there was no seismic code,” said Brockman, stating in turn that if these improvements are not made, then “we do have a risk for issues if there is a significant earthquake that comes from the New Madrid Fault Line. So, all of the things that we are doing are to also make sure that every one of our facilities is not only efficient and comfortable, but also safe.” It should be noted that Memphis is within 115 miles or so of the New Madrid Fault.
¤ Children’s play area;
¤ New jet bridges;
¤ Stage for live music in Rotunda area;
¤ Additional lounge areas (a mother’s comfort lounge, a military lounge, and a separate St. Jude-Le Bonheur children’s area specially designed for the little patients);
¤ More modern amenities;
¤ More seatings (individual high back and low back seats with tables);
¤ Additional charging stations. Every seat in the whole room will have a plug and a USB charging port;
¤ Work stations for people that need to do some work;
¤ Retail shops and restaurants;
¤ Concessions;
¤ Flight information screens;
¤ Higher ceilings;
¤ Higher windows called curtain walls (with high technology glass provided by a manufacturer in Olive Branch, MS).
“Everything will be brand new in Concourse B,” Brockman said. “We want to provide the possible experience to every passenger. Travelers returning home to Memphis will feel the pride that comes with knowing their airport is the reflection of the city they love … Travelers coming to Memphis for the first time will immediately experience the city’s culture and personality, combining a modern feel with old style southern hospitality.”
Currently, Memphis International Airport has 10 airlines and more than 30 nonstop flights to different destinations. It also offers dozens of daily flights worldwide, with connections in other major airports.

Vacation Express will launch its summer nonstop weekly service between Memphis International Airport (MEM) and Cancun International Airport (CUN) on Monday, May 20. The flight will depart on Saturdays from May 25-July 27.
“We’ve got a lot going on right now, but we are not done. The concourse modernization is underway and that is really the first of what I would call three phases to enhance, to truly modernize all of the passenger facilities,” said Brockman, adding that the main terminal (ticketing, baggage, claim, etc.) will also have the same seismic upgrade and modernization that has been done on the concourse.
On the other hand, the Memphis International Airport is the world’s second busiest cargo airport in the world (next to Hong Kong, China) and the busiest cargo airport in North America due to its strategic geographical situation. Moreover, MEM is the home to the FedEx Express World Hub, which is responsible for about 99% of the overall cargo handled at MEM and features about 450 combined arrivals and departures per day.
In 2018, MEM saw an increase of 5.4% in passengers – more than 4.4 million passengers passed through MEM in 2018, an increase of more than 200,000 from 2017 -, as well as a 3.08% increase in cargo vs. 2017.
