Mexico seizes more than 1 ton of cocaine in Pacific
Mexico City, Jul 4 (EFE).- Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) has seized 1.16 tons of cocaine in 34 packages in the Mexican Pacific, the agency reported Tuesday.
The confiscation was the result of a series of operations by the coast guard around the port of Acapulco in the state of Guerrero.
Semar arrested five men and confiscated several containers with approximately 400 liters of fuel.
The agency said in a statement that the arrests were made with naval personnel on board, “with the aim of preventing the trafficking of goods, as well as to curb poaching performed within the Exclusive Economic Zone.”
The apprehended persons were handed over to relevant Mexican authorities along with the drugs and fuel.
“These actions are part of the maritime, air and land surveillance operations carried out by the Secretariat of the Navy through the Mexican Navy, to inhibit criminal action, in order to guarantee and maintain the rule of law in the Mexican Marine Zones,” said Semar.
Last week, the agency also secured more than 3.5 tons of cocaine in 186 packages aboard a submarine, for which five people were also arrested. EFE
