Mid-South Fairgrounds To Be Used for Drive-Thru Coronavirus Testing, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland Says

Los Terrenos de la Feria se utilizarán “drive-thru” de exámenes para coronavirus, dice el alcalde de Memphis, Jim Strickland

MEMPHIS, TN (Commercial Appeal) — Memphis, Shelby County and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center will hold drive-thru testing for the coronavirus, COVID-19, at the Mid-South Fairgrounds as soon as the testing equipment becomes available, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said Thursday.

“As we have been doing for the past two weeks, the City of Memphis is taking every precaution necessary to limit the spread of COVID19 through policy, declaration, and direct action,” Strickland said in a news release.

“In that same spirit, we are taking action now to get ready for drive thru testing at Tiger Lane when test kits become more widely available,” Strickland said. “We are currently working through logistics to make sure once we have tests the process is smooth and efficient. No tests are being administered today.”

Tents were first seen at the fairgrounds Wednesday night, according to media reports. On Thursday, Memphis and other officials game-planned how it would intake patients, the safe distance between cars and how medical information would be inputted.

At present, the city and county, and Shelby County Health Department don’t have access to the amount of testing equipment needed to utilize drive-thru testing on a broad scale.

The testing will not be for everyone. It will be for those who meet Centers for Disease Control and Prevention parameters for testing as well as guidelines from the Shelby County Health Department.
