13 soldiers killed by infiltrator attack in western Afghanistan

Kabul, Jan 16 (efe-epa).- At least 13 pro-government Afghan troops were shot dead by infiltrator Taliban members in the western province of Herat, the authorities announced on Saturday.

The attack occurred at around 9 pm local time in Herat’s Ghoryan district, Abdul Ahad Walizada, spokesman for Herat police told Efe without providing further details.

“Two Taliban infiltrators, opened fire on the Arbakis (pro-government forces) and killed 13 of them,” a provincial government official told Efe on condition of anonymity.

The infiltrators, recently recruited by the pro-government forces, took the security force weapons and joined Taliban, the source added.

The provincial government has assigned a delegation to investigate the incident.

Taliban members are still carrying out attacks in the country despite peace talks with the government that have taken place in Doha over the past for months.

In addition to attacks on checkpoints, Afghanistan has witnessed a series of selective assaults on journalists, activists, politicians and intellectuals.

This kind of attacks increased in 2020, when shootings or detonations of bombs against the vehicles of the victims took place almost on a daily basis in the country.

The authorities have blamed the attacks on the insurgents who have repeatedly denied their responsibility.

In another attack this morning, a Taliban suicide bomber detonated his explosive laden vehicle near a National Directorate of Security car workshop in the southern Kandahar province’s Daman district.

After the bombing, three suicide bombers tried to storm into the workshop, but “fortunately in the bombing and clashes we have only two persons injured and four suicide bombers were killed in the attack,” Farid Ahmad Mashal, Security Chief of Kandahar Police, said in a statement. EFE-EPA
