Spotify and the Uncertain Future of Artist Discovery

Though it began as a simple streaming platform, Spotify’s dominance in music distribution has become more and more apparent in recent years. Because of this, Spotify has a tremendous ability to influence how people access and listen to music.

Recently, Spotify has been in the news for their technological innovations. They have developed technology that beat-matches two tracks, as if a DJ were mixing them. On top of that, Spotify has announced they will gather song data from users, allowing them to describe genre, mood, and other features.

However, as Spotify refines the accuracy of their cataloging system, they also are largely influential in which types of music people access. When Katy Perry released the single Rise initially as an Apple Music exclusive in 2016, it failed to move past No.11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Though a saturation of fist-pumper songs may have been Rise’s downfall, Spotify’s lack of playlist support for the song—which may be a form of retaliation for her Apple Music exclusive—had a tremendous effect on its success.

Though most top artists could likely rebound if Spotify refused to give them playlist support, the impact on a small artist is much greater. Due to the platform’s dominance, Spotify’s role as the arbiter of artist success is becoming more concrete.
