G7 pledges to support Ukraine, punish Putin ‘as long as necessary’

Elmau, Germany, Jun 27 (EFE).- Leaders of the Group of Seven Monday pledged their “steadfast” solidarity with Ukraine and announced it would pursue new sanctions to further isolate Russia.

“We, the Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7), are steadfast in our solidarity with Ukraine, and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to support the government and people of Ukraine in their courageous defense of their country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and in their fight for a peaceful, prosperous and democratic future,” the group said in a statement.

“We will continue to provide financial, humanitarian, military and diplomatic support and stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes,” it added.

The G7, which brings together the world’s most developed economies, said it would intensify international, economic and political pressure on Russian president Vladimir Putin “for as long as necessary.”

“We will continue to explore new ways to isolate Russia from participating in the global market and crack down on evasion,” the statement said.

Measures will include reducing Russia’s revenues, including from gold and energy.

New sanctions will also target Russia’s access to “key industrial inputs, services, and technologies produced by our economies,” the G7 said.

“Finally, we will increase the costs of Russia’s war on Ukraine by imposing targeted sanctions on those responsible for war crimes, exercising illegitimate authority in Ukraine, and those standing behind Russia’s engagement in efforts to increase global food insecurity by stealing and exporting Ukrainian grain or otherwise profit illegitimately from the war,” it added.

The G7 statement came shortly after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the leaders and asked for tougher sanctions on Russia, defense systems and help with the export of Ukrainian grain blocked by Russia. EFE
