South Korea donates $3 million to Japanese region affected by quake

Seoul, Jan 11 (EFE).- South Korea will provide humanitarian assistance worth $3 million to the Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa, the most affected by the Jan. 1 earthquake, which has so far left more than 200 dead, the country’s foreign office announced Thursday.

“Our Government hopes that this support will help the affected areas recover and provide prompt help to residents. We hope this will help them return to their daily lives,” the South Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said the number of people evacuated on the Noto peninsula, where the epicenter of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded, is about 26,000.

The latest death toll from the earthquake amounts to 213, according to Japanese authorities, who continue to search for 52 people missing in a region hit by adverse weather conditions in recent days.

Many of the evacuation centers in Ishikawa, operated by volunteers, are suffering from a lack of manpower, in a prefecture that also has a shortage of doctors, nurses and other personnel for health centers, Ishikawa Governor Hiroshi Hase said Wednesday. EFE
