Emirati FM arrives in Jerusalem to mark normalization deal anniversary
Jerusalem, Sep 15 (EFE).- Foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan traveled to Jerusalem on Thursday to mark the second anniversary of the signing of the Abraham Accords that normalized ties between Israel and the UAE.
Al Nahyan was received by Israeli president Isaac Herzog at the presidential palace in Jerusalem.
“The world looks at the Abraham Accords with awe and respect and says there’s a new Middle East in many ways, being created and moving forward,” Herzog said.
The United States-brokered Abraham Accords, signed in 2020 in Washington, normalized diplomatic ties between Israel and the UAE, as well as Bahrain. The two Gulf countries were later followed by Sudan and Morocco.
The UAE’s top diplomat is expected to hold private meetings with Israeli prime minister Yair Lapid, and other senior officials
Al Nahyan visited Israel in March to take part in the Negev summit, which hosted the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco and the US secretary of state.
Lapid also traveled to the UAE in June 2021 to inaugurate the Israeli embassy there and meet the country’s foreign minister for the first time.
Both countries signed a free trade agreement and maintain weekly direct flights with each other. EFE
