Nepal PM set to face vote of confidence

Kathmandu, Jan 10 (EFE).- Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, aka Prachanda, is set to face a vote of confidence in parliament on Tuesday.

Prachanda, the chairman of the Maoist Center party, was appointed Nepal’s 44th prime minister on Dec. 25 with the backing of seven parties and 169 lawmakers, including three independent parliamentarians.

The following day, he was sworn in as the country’s prime minister for the third time.

The vote of confidence was scheduled to be held at 11 am but has been postponed to 1 pm due to some technical reason, according to a notice issued by the parliament secretariat in the morning.

According to a constitutional provision, the prime minister must submit to a vote of confidence within one month of taking office.

A leader of Nepali Congress, the largest party in parliament, told EFE that Prachanda met the party’s leader and former prime minister, Sher Bahadur Deuba, at his residence on Monday and asked him for his support.

“Deuba has replied that the decision will be taken after holding a discussion in the party,” the leader said, adding that a party meeting was underway.

Prachanda has also met CPN United Samajwadi Party Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal and leaders of other parties. EFE
