Nicaragua bars EFE correspondent in Managua from returning home

Madrid, Nov 30 (EFE).- Luis Felipe Palacios, EFE news agency’s correspondent in Managua, has been banned from entering Nicaragua by the country’s authorities.

The Nicaraguan journalist was due to return to the Central American nation after a work trip to Panama.

Palacios, who began working at EFE in 2006 and was appointed the agency’s chief correspondent in Nicaragua in 2011, was unable to board a flight from Miami to Managua on November 21 because Nicaraguan authorities had denied him entry, the airline said.

“We inform you that the request for entry has not been authorized by the Nicaraguan immigration authorities. You will not be allowed to board,” according to the email sent to the EFE journalist in Nicaragua by Avianca Airlines.

The journalist, 44, had been in Panama to attend events commemorating the 50th anniversary of EFE’s presence in Central America, which was also attended by the president of the agency, Gabriela Cañas, as well as the rest of EFE’s correspondents in Central America and other senior executives.

Luis Felipe Palacios, who prior to joining Efe had worked for the La Prensa newspaper, has covered some of the most important events in Nicaragua in recent decades, including the ongoing crisis that has followed the protests in 2018, presidential summits and natural disasters, including Hurricane Felix in 2007.

The EFE journalist has also covered events such as the granting of asylum to members of Colombian armed rebels FARC and the crisis with Honduras after the coup d’état against former president Manuel Zelaya in 2009.

With a degree in Social Communication, specialized in written press, Luis Felipe Palacios is a multimedia journalist who has also covered poetry festivals and interviewed artists, singers and writers. EFE
