MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — Memphis Shelby County School Board members just passed a resolution that places Superintendent Dr. Joris Ray on paid administrative leave beginning Thursday, July 14.
“Today is officially the start of the investigation,” said MSCS Chairwoman Michelle McKissack.
Amid allegations of extramarital affairs with current and former school district staff, Memphis Shelby County School board members voted to place their top educator on paid administrative leave.
Board members voted 7- 2 to pass a resolution putting Ray on leave after hearing from several public speakers, most of them school district staff, in support of Dr. Ray.
The two board members who voted against the resolution were Joyce Dorse Coleman and Stephanie Love.
The resolution also appoints former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, Edward L. Stanton III, to review allegations of policy violations and Herman Morris Jr. to advise the board on actions to take at the conclusion of the investigation.
Board Chairwoman Michelle McKissack says Deputy Superintendents Dr. John Baker and Dr. Angela Whitelaw will lead the district in Ray’s absence.
No specific time frame was given on when the investigation will conclude along with how much this investigation will cost.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — Los miembros de la Junta Escolar del condado de Memphis Shelby acaban de aprobar una resolución que coloca al superintendente Dr. Joris Ray en licencia administrativa pagada a partir del jueves, 14 de julio.
En medio de acusaciones de relaciones extramatrimoniales con personal actual y anterior del distrito escolar, los miembros de la junta escolar del condado de Memphis Shelby votaron para colocar a su mejor educador en licencia administrativa pagada.
Los miembros de la junta votaron 7-2 para aprobar una resolución que pusiera a Ray en licencia después de escuchar a varios oradores públicos, la mayoría de ellos personal del distrito escolar, en apoyo del Dr. Ray.
Los dos miembros de la junta que votaron en contra de la resolución fueron Joyce Dorse Coleman y Stephanie Love.
La resolución también nombra al exfiscal federal para el Distrito Oeste de Tennessee, Edward L. Stanton III, para revisar las denuncias de violaciones de políticas y a Herman Morris Jr. para asesorar a la junta sobre las acciones a tomar al concluir la investigación.
