Morata falls short for Spain in scoreless draw with Sweden

Seville, Spain, Jun 14 (EFE).- Striker Alvaro Morata squandered a pair a great chances and Spain had to settle for a 0-0 draw here Monday against Sweden in the Euro 2000 kickoff for both squads.

La Roja, European champions in 2008 and 2012, drew for a fifth time in their last eight matches.

For the moment, Spain must content themselves with a share of second place in Group E behind Slovakia, 2-1 winners over Poland earlier Monday in Russia.

Robin Olsen was solid in goal for the Swedes, who had less than 15 percent possession yet still generated what was arguably the best scoring opportunity of the contest.

Just past the hour-mark, Alexander Isak got the better of three Spanish defenders before sending the ball across goal to Marcus Berg only to watch his teammate inexplicably fail to score.

Coming on in the 74th minute for Dani Olmo, Gerard Moreno forced a good stop from Olsen at the end of regulation and headed just wide deep in stoppage time.

The more than 12,000 spectators at Seville’s La Cartuja stadium included Spain’s King Felipe VI and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin. EFE
