Russia hits new daily record with over 900 Covid-19 deaths

Moscow, Oct 9 (EFE).- Russia daily Covid-19 death toll hit a new record Saturday with 968 new deaths in the last 24 hours, official data showed.

The figure is the highest since the beginning of the pandemic in the country, which has recorded 215.453 Covid-19 deaths in total.

Health authorities reported 29,362 new infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the country close to the 30,000 daily infections mark.

The capital Moscow is the worst hit by the pandemic, with 6,001 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, 1,407 more than on Friday and the highest in three months.

Authorities attribute the increase in cases mainly to the spread of the delta variant, which is more contagious than the previous ones.

Russians are reluctant to get vaccinated, which has blocked the government’s plan to vaccinate 60% of the population before the end of the year.

So far, only 44.96 million Russians, 30.8% of the population, have received the full course of the vaccine, according to official data. EFE
