Travel back in time at Europe’s second-largest drive-in cinema in Malaga

Malaga, Spain, Oct 9 (EFE).- At Autocine Málaga Metrovacesa, Europe’s second-largest outdoor cinema, some 600 visitors traveled back to the 50s in America at a screening of the musical romantic comedy film Grease.

The 250 meter large screen offers viewers a unique cinematic experience in the 16,000 square meter outdoor theatre located in the Guadalhorce industrial area in Malaga.

The sound of rock music and smell of popcorn invites the audience in, who can choose between a fast food meal at an ‘American diner’ to pizza or hotdogs.

The Autocine Málaga Metrovacesa aims to transform the cinema experience from just watching a movie to a full immersive journey back in time.

The drive-in cinema plans to screen a range of blockbuster films including the new Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios movie “Venom: There Will Be Carnage” starring Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson.

Autocine Málaga Metrovacesa was inspired by American drive-in theatres in the 1950s by two friends who met in Madrid in 2015.

Cristina Porta and Tamara Istambul wanted to re-invent the concept for Spain.

According to Istambul, what people like about drive-in cinemas is how the vehicle becomes “a private box” in which you can listen to the audio of the film through the car’s radio, order food to be brought to you, put your feet on the dashboard and feel “as if you were in your living room at home”.
