No respite as Spain’s unseasonal heatwave persists

Madrid, Jun 14 (EFE).- The unseasonal heatwave that has gripped nearly all of Spain persisted Tuesday as temperatures of up to 44C (111.2F) were expected in some parts of the country.

The Spanish meteorological agency Aemet said that daytime temperatures were between 4 to 13C above the normal average for this time of the year.

The agency has issued weather warnings for extreme heat in all Spain except the northern Asturias region and the Canary Islands.

It added that the heatwave was forecast to be the hottest to hit the country in mid-June in the last 20 years.

The thermometer is forecast to hit 40C (104F) in the Tagus and Ebro valleys in central Spain while the cities of Zaragoza, Toledo and Madrid were braced for 36C.

Parts of the Guadalquivir valley in southern Spain were set to hit 44C on Tuesday.

The heatwave, which is expected to peak Wednesday but could drag on for several days, is being fed by a combination of high atmospheric pressure, intense sun and hot air from North Africa.

Aemet said some the western half of the Spanish peninsula could see “significant decrease” in temperatures on Friday but that the heat could linger in eastern parts. EFE
