Russian ambassador to Poland drenched in red paint by activists
Krakow, Poland, May 9 (EFE).- Russia’s ambassador to Poland Sergey Andreyev on Monday was covered in red paint by a group of activists protesting against the war in Ukraine.
Andreyev was visiting a cemetery in Warsaw to pay tribute to Red Army soldiers who died in World War II on the occasion of Victory in Europe Day.
A group of activists protesting against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine interrupted the ceremony and threw red paint over the ambassador.
The drenched Andreyev shouted at the crowd that he was proud of his president Vladimir Putin and claimed that the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk did not belong to Ukraine.
The Soviet military cemetery was established in Warsaw shortly after the end of World War II and houses the remains of more than 20,000 Red Army soldiers killed between 1944 and 1945.
Anti-Russian sentiment has grown in Poland following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Warsaw City Council recently presented an art installation authorizing a group of artists to paint 60 meters of sidewalk, including those in front of the Russian embassy, with murals.
Graffiti against the invasion of Ukraine and images of Putin caricatured as Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler can be seen across Krakow and Warsaw. EFE
