Israeli military arrests 2 Hamas suspects from occupied West Bank

Jerusalem, July 31 (EFE).- The Israeli army conducted its first raid in a month in Jenin city of the occupied West Bank to arrest two suspected Hamas members.

The army said gunshots were heard during the raid, weeks after a massive military operation in the northern city of the West Bank.

A military vehicle got stuck and was restored after it suffered a technical problem, said the army.

The military said the operation’s objective was to arrest “two suspects affiliated with the Hamas terrorist organization.”

Palestinian media published videos, in which gunshots could be heard ringing in the city during the military raid.

The official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, identified the two suspects as Fathi al-Atoum and Rabih as-Sanouri.

They had been previously arrested but released by the Israeli army.

In addition to the two detainees in Jenin, the Israeli security forces arrested another 10 Palestinians in separate raids on the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli Army previously entered Jenin on July 3 for a major two-day raid, involving more than 1,000 ground operatives and airstrikes with drones, to fight the Jenin Brigade, which brings together militias linked to different Palestinian factions.

The Jenin refugee camp is the stronghold of the Palestinian militant movement in the West Bank and a stronghold of the Islamic Jihad and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

However, Hamas militant group has grown more in the last year in the area.

The military campaign claimed at least 12 Palestinians and wounded more than 150, in addition to the death of an Israeli soldier by “friendly fire.”

The occupied West Bank is experiencing its biggest spiral of violence since the Second Intifada (2000-05).

Some 168 Palestinians, including 29 children, have already died in the conflict this year.

Most of the dead were militants who lost their lives in armed clashes with Israeli troops.

The region has seen the proliferation of new Palestinian armed groups.

Frequent attacks by the Palestinian groups have left 27 Israelis dead, most of them settlers. EFE
