Anti-coup protests in Sudan, death of protester confirmed

Khartoum, Nov 30 (EFE).- Anti-coup mass protests on Tuesday renewed in the Sudanese capital as a watchdog confirmed the death of a demonstrator in a previous round of rallies.

Thousands of people took to the streets against Oct 25’s coup and a deal that was struck between the military and prime minister Abdallah Hamdok that reinstates the latter in his position after being toppled.

The rallies, which began in different points of Khartoum, headed to the presidential palace as protesters chanted slogans such as “The people want to overthrow the regime”, among others.

Among the protesters was former industry minister, Ibrahim al-sheik, who was arrested following the coup and has just been released.

 In the meantime, Sudan’s independent doctors’ committee announced that a 21-year-old protester died after being hit in the head with a baton by riot police on Thursday, resulting in a brain hemorrhage.

Since the coup, protests have continued in Sudan, in which over 40 people have died, many of them from gunshot wounds, according to the committee.

Nearly a month after the coup, Sudan’s strongman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan reached an agreement with some political forces to reinstate Hamdok as prime minister.

The pact, however, has been rejected by the main civil alliance that was part of the government that led the transition to democracy from 2019 until the coup.

Over the past few days, several of the politicians who had been arrested during the coup have been released, but the opposition denounces that others remain in prison. EFE
