Parade in Mexican state mixes Day of Dead, Halloween

San Cristobal de Las Casas, Mexico, Oct 31 (EFE).- Hundreds of skulls, ghosts and monsters paraded Monday through the main streets of the Mexican city of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas state, to celebrate the mixture of the traditional Day of the Dead of Mexico and Halloween.

This celebration is an example of how diverse cultures mix and this results in new traditions or cultural practices.

Founded in 1528, San Cristobal de las Casas is a city rooted in its customs that in recent years has taken a turn by initiating traditions, such as trick or treating from house to house, even holding large parades. For 3 years now, children, young people and adults “dress up as death” or monsters with the representative regional costumes of Chiapas.

Through the streets of this city the famous “catrinas,” traditional skulls, were seen waving their wide black skirts with colored flowers and behind them is a handful of “skeletons,” people who wear the traditional parachico suit, a shirt white and dark pants and a colored scarf.

While the women splendidly wear their Tehuana dresses, they also don costumes of fictional characters such as vampires and monsters.

The meeting point for the hundreds of participants was at the main entrance of the city, in the Merced neighborhood, to the west of the city, where approximately 500 people characterized and dressed in their typical costumes and costumes walked through the city.

This cultural stop was joined by people who enjoy dressing up and celebrating life through death. EFE
