Young Latino Wins Local Short Film Competition

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Sergio Samir Garcia-Bustamante used to help with the family business run by his mom, Carolina Bustamante, a well-known local businesswoman who has been active in the community for years.

During his childhood, the Hispanic teenager enjoyed spending hours watching movies and wondering at the same time how superheroes performed certain actions. His concern for the magic of cinema led him to continue investigating the tricks “behind the scenes” and other tasks related to the seventh art.

While in class at Memphis High School, his teacher Marshonn Calvin noticed his enthusiasm for activities related to video and cinematography and supported him, thus encouraging him to enter the “Emerging Filmmakers” competition, organized by Memphis FilmWorks.

Sergio and other East High School students focused on Jarvis Greer’s career, the Sports Director at WMC Action News 5, as the topic to enter the competition, which they won. The award? One-year paid apprenticeship with the Memphis FilmWorks production team.

At first, Sergio’s mother was skeptical about what he wanted to study. And not only that; Sergio didn’t have a computer at home, so his teacher lent him his own computer for the project.

According to Sergio, the time spent on the project was 4 to 6 hours a day for a week. The young man admits that time passed quickly because it was an activity that he fully enjoyed.

From filming, acting, editing, and lighting to the type of story to be projected, Sergio is interested in expanding his knowledge in the most diverse fields that make up this artistic activity.

Currently, he is ready to study what he wants at the University of Memphis, where he hopes to interact with others and, above all, develop all his ideas and projects.

During an interview with La Prensa Latina Media, Sergio sent a message to the youth: “Keep dreaming and work hard to achieve your dreams, even if they seem impossible or are not accepted by your family.”

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Sergio Samir García Bustamante solía ayudar con el negocio familiar de brincolines que administra su mamá, Carolina Bustamante, una reconocida mujer de negocios local que ha estado activa durante años en la comunidad.

Durante su niñez, Sergio disfrutaba de pasar horas viendo películas y preguntándose a la vez cómo era que los superhéroes ejecutaban ciertas acciones.

Su inquietud por la magia del cine lo llevó a seguir investigando sobre los trucos “detrás de las cámaras” y otros menesteres relacionados con el séptimo arte.

Durante sus estudios en East Memphis High School, su maestro Marshonn Calvin notó el entusiasmo que tenía por las actividades relacionadas con video y cinematografía y lo apoyó, guiándolo así para concursar en el evento de “Emerging Filmmakers”, que organiza Memphis FilmWorks.

Sergio y otros estudiantes de East High School se enfocaron en la carrera profesional de Jarvis Greer, el director de deportes del canal de televisión WMC Action News 5, como el tema para entrar a la competencia, la cual ganaron. ¿El premio? Un año pagado para aprender con el equipo de producción de Memphis FilmWorks.

Al principio, la mamá de Sergio mostró su escepticismo con respecto a lo que él quería estudiar, algo muy común en la comunidad latina, donde hay una tendencia a desarrollar un trabajo físico o al menos una carrera donde se exprese algo tangible o de desempeño en una actividad que sea común, según la forma tradicional de pensar.

Y no sólo eso, Sergio tuvo que buscar la forma de hacer su proyecto, ya que carecía de una computadora, la cual fue facilitada por el mismo profesor que lo impulsó para entrar a la competencia fílmica.

De acuerdo con Sergio, el tiempo invertido en el proyecto fue de 4 a 6 horas diarias por una semana. El joven reconoce que se le pasaba rápido el tiempo por ser una actividad que disfrutaba plenamente.

Desde la filmación, actuación, edición e iluminación hasta el tipo de tema e historia a proyectar, Sergio está interesado en ampliar sus conocimientos en los campos más diversos que componen esta actividad artística.

Actualmente, él está listo para estudiar lo que quiere en la Universidad de Memphis, donde espera relacionarse y, sobre todo, desarrollar todas sus ideas y proyectos.

En una entrevista con La Prensa Latina Media, Sergio aprovechó la oportunidad para inspirar a otros jóvenes: “Sigan soñando y trabajen duro para alcanzar sus sueños, aunque estos parezcan imposibles o no sean aceptados por sus familias”.
