Upstarts Villarreal seek to extend European run against out-of-sorts Bayern

Berlin/Castellon (Spain), Apr 11 (EFE).- With a shock 1-0 first-leg advantage under their belt, Villarreal hope to finish what they started against Bayern Munich when they visit the Alliance Arena on Tuesday evening.

The Spanish team are one win — or a draw — away from their first-ever Champions League semi-final but coach Unai Emery knows it will be no walk in the park, despite Bayern Munich’s recent drop in form and Villarreal’s 3-0 win against Juventus to make the quarter-finals.

“It’s going to be more complicated,” he said at a presser on the eve of quarter-final second leg.

“We must hold them in defense and be dangerous on the attack,” he added.

Emery’s arrival as the team’s head coach in 2020 revitalized Villarreal’s European profile as he guided them to victory in last year’s Europa League.

Bayern’s coach Julian Nagelsmann on Monday set out some of his tactics, too.

“We can’t give Villarreal the time they need to find their rhythm. We need to be more unpleasant to play against,” he said at a presser.

“However, we shouldn’t spend too much time talking about it, and instead need to make sure we deliver tomorrow,” he added. EFE
