Salima Rhadia Mukansanga becomes 1st woman to officiate Afcon game

Sports Desk, Jan 18 (EFE).- Salima Rhadia Mukansanga on Tuesday became the first woman ever to officiate an African Cup of Nations game in Zimbabwe’s 2-1 win over Guinea.

The Rwandese had to handle an intense game in which Guinea managed to advance to the knock-out stage of the tournament as Group B runner-ups despite the defeat.

She led an all-woman referring team, including Cameroonian Carine Atemzabong and the Moroccan Fatiha Jermoumi, as assistant and the Moroccan Bouchra Karboubi as a VAR referee.

The 35-year-old has already made history in this edition of the tournament held in Cameron, after she was named a fourth referee in Guinea’s 1-0 victory over Malawi on 10 January.

Mukansanga also became the first Rwandan to officiate an Olympic match by refereeing England-Chile (2-0) in the group stage at the Tokyo Summer Games. EFE
