Verstappen takes pole position for Canadian Grand Prix

Sports Desk, Jun 17 (EFE).- Formula One championship points leader Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished first Saturday in qualifying for the Grand Prix of Canada.

Under a downpour, the reigning two-time champion from the Netherlands did a fastest lap of 1:25.858 at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal to grab pole position for the fifth time this season.

Germany’s Nico Hülkenberg (Haas) surprised everyone by taking second place, ahead of Spanish two-time champion Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin).

The Spaniard will share the second row with Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), who shares with Michael Schumacher the record for most F1 titles, seven.

Hamilton’s teammate and countryman, George Russell, was the fifth-fastest in Q3, followed by France’s Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and another British driver, Lando Norris (McLaren).

Spain’s Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and Thailand’s Alex Albon (Williams) completed the top 10.

Verstappen, the winner in five of the first seven races of the season and his teammate, Mexico’s Sergio “Checo” Perez, saw the checkered flag twice.

The Dutchman has 170 points in the driver standings, followed by Perez (117), Alonso (99), Hamilton (87), and Russell (65).
