Stax Museum of American Soul Music Offers a True Encounter with the Musical History of Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — For those who haven’t been there or don’t know too much about the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, this iconic venue is the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of Stax Records and American soul music. In addition, it is an entity of the Soulsville Foundation, which also operates the Stax Music Academy and The Soulsville Charter School on the same campus.

The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is located in Memphis (926 E. McLemore Ave. Memphis, TN 38126), in what was previously the Stax Records studio, and pays special tribute to the artists who recorded there – Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, Johnnie Taylor, Albert King, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Rufus, and Carla Thomas –, as well as other American soul legends – Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Ann Peebles, The Jackson Five, Patti LaBelle, Parliament-Funkadelic, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, etc. –, with interactive exhibits, films, stage costumes, musical instruments, recording equipment, records, photographs, permanent and changing galleries, and a rare and wonderful collection of more than 2,000 items of memorabilia and artifacts.

Regarding the Stax Music Academy, it is a state-of-the-art facility where primarily at-risk youth are taught through music education and other unique performance opportunities that they would otherwise never experience. The building also houses the Soulsville Charter School, an academically rigorous and musically rich educational institution where students study math, language arts, science, social studies, and orchestra. The Soulsville Symphony Orchestra has played for artists such as Stevie Wonder, John Legend, and Isaac Hayes.

The Stax Museum of American Soul Music Reopens

After being closed for three months, since March 18, due to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), the famous Stax Museum of American Soul Music has reopened its doors to the public. Its hours of operation until June 27 will be from Thursday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Beginning July 1, the museum will return to its regular hours of Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission for Shelby County residents is free on Tuesday afternoons after 1 p.m.

During this reopening period, the museum will be taking all the preventive measures outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to slow the spread of COVID-19. For this reason, it is recommended to use masks to visit the place.

As for the museum’s 17-minute introductory documentary, it will be shown on set schedule to no more than 25 guests at a time in seats that are six feet apart in order to continue social distancing. The film will be shown every 30 minutes to allow for a cleaning of the theater after each showing.

The museum also has a new exhibit: “BEAUTIFUL SOULS: JOEL BRODSKY AND THE FACES OF STAX RECORDS,” a collection of photographs by the famous photographer Joel Brodsky. Some of the Stax artists featured in the exhibition are Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Margie Joseph, and Rufus Thomas.

El Stax Museum of American Soul Music se encuentra ubicado en Memphis (926 E. La Academia de Música Stax, por su lado, es una instalación de vanguardia donde se enseña principalmente a los jóvenes en riesgo a través de la educación musical y otras oportunidades de actuación únicas que de otra manera ellos nunca experimentarían. El edificio también alberga la Escuela Chárter Soulsville, una institución educativa académicamente rigurosa y musicalmente rica donde los estudiantes estudian matemáticas, artes del lenguaje, ciencias, estudios sociales y orquesta. La Orquesta Sinfónica de Soulsville ha tocado para artistas como Stevie Wonder, John Legend e Isaac Hayes.

Reapertura del Stax Museum of American Soul Music

Luego de estar cerrado por tres meses, desde el 18 de marzo, debido a la pandemia del coronavirus (COVID-19), el famoso Stax Museum of American Soul Music ha vuelto a abrir sus puertas. Su horario hasta el 27 de junio será de jueves a sábado, de 10 a.m. a 5 p.m. A partir del 1 de julio, el museo volverá a su horario habitual de martes a domingo, de 10 a.m. a 5 p.m. La entrada para los residentes del condado de Shelby es gratuita los martes por la tarde después de la 1 p.m.

Durante este período de reapertura, el museo estará tomando todas las medidas de prevención indicadas por los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) para evitar la propagación del COVID-19. Por tal motivo, se recomienda usar mascarillas para visitar el lugar.

En cuanto a su galardonado documental introductorio de 17 minutos, este será mostrado en el horario establecido a no más de 25 personas a la vez, en asientos que están a seis pies de distancia de cada uno, para continuar con el distanciamiento social. La película será proyectada cada 30 minutos para permitir una limpieza del teatro después de cada presentación.

El museo también cuenta con una nueva exhibición: “ALMAS HERMOSAS: JOEL BRODSKY Y LAS CARAS DE STAX RECORDS”, una colección de fotografías del famoso fotógrafo Joel Brodsky. Algunos de los artistas de Stax que están representados en la exhibición son Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Margie Joseph y Rufus Thomas.
