Man City stay on Liverpool’s heels with 2-0 win over Burnley

Sports Desk, Oct 16 (EFE).- Defending champions Manchester City defeated Burnley 2-0 Saturday to remain just a point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Starting goalkeeper Ederson and striker Gabriel Jesus were not available for the contest at the Etihad because they played for Brazil Thursday night in a World Cup qualifier.

Against the 19th-place Clarets, City coach Pep Guardiola also took the opportunity to rest several other starters, including Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker, while picking Raheem Sterling for the 11 a day after publicly telling the forward he was free to seek a transfer if was he unhappy about a lack of playing time.

The hosts went ahead in the 12th minute, when Bernardo Silva scored off the rebound after Burnley keeper Nick Pope turned aside Phil Foden’s strike.

Pope did well three minutes later to stop Joao Cancelo from making it 2-0. At the other end, City keeper Zack Steffen denied Maxwel Cornet’s initial effort on the counter and then watched the Burnley man fire over the cross-bar on his second effort.

City’s Riyad Mahrez likewise overshot the mark on an opportunity five minutes into the second half and the Silva goal remained the only thing separating the sides until Kevin de Bruyne beat Pope in the 70th minute.

It was the Belgian international’s third goal in his last five matches with City.

Chris Wood came close to narrowing the deficit for Burnley in the 79th, only to see his strike clip the cross-bar and go over. EFE msg/dr
