Como parte del ciclo de cine Wider Angle Film Series, la Biblioteca Pública Central de Memphis presentará la película cubana Un traductor, dirigida por los hermanos Rodrigo y Sebastián Barriuso, el próximo martes, 14 de mayo, a las 6:30 p.m. La proyección gratuita del largometraje -subtitulado en inglés- se realizará en la Sala de Reuniones A, de la sede Benjamin L. Hooks (3030 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38111).
En abril de 1986, un accidente durante una prueba nuclear en una base soviética, cercana a la ciudad de Chernóbil, se transformó en uno de los mayores desastres medioambientales de la historia. El material tóxico y radiactivo afectó directamente a unas 116.000 personas de la localidad, a unos 600.000 trabajadores que participaron en la descontaminación de la zona y se dispersó en áreas que comprendían una población mayor a los 5 millones de habitantes. Hasta hoy, no existen investigaciones concluyentes sobre la incidencia de la tragedia en la mortalidad poblacional.
Un traductor se traslada a la Cuba de fines de la década de 1980, para adoptar desde un punto de vista humano, el drama acaecido en la Unión Soviética (URSS). La trama gira en torno a Malin, un profesor de literatura rusa al que de improvisto le toca oficiar de intérprete en un hospital de La Habana que ha acogido a pacientes afectados por el desastre atómico.
Aunque en un principio, el académico se muestra reticente a oficiar de traductor, su visión del mundo pronto se ve transformada a raíz del contacto con las víctimas más indefensas de la catástrofe: los niños enfermos por la radiación nuclear.
La vida personal de Malin también sufre un vuelco significativo, a medida que la familia del protagonista también se ve alcanzada por los efectos de la tragedia. En paralelo, la caída del muro de Berlín, en 1989, marca no sólo el fin de la URSS, sino el comienzo de una de las crisis económicas más importantes de la historia de Cuba.
Un traductor retrata el inicio de la depresión económica cubana, conocida como Período Especial, de modo que el conflicto individual resulta ser el reflejo de un quiebre político mayor. Por esto, la escasez energética, así como de productos y servicios, afecta severamente el hogar que, por momentos, como el padre, parece ir a la deriva. Los hermanos Barriuso entrelazan con una belleza singular la fatalidad, los afectos y la angustia privada y colectiva junto a la historia del siglo XX.

As part of the Wider Angle Film Series, the Memphis Public Library is presenting the Cuban movie Un traductor, directed by brothers Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso, next Tuesday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m. The free screening of the film -in Spanish with English subtitles- is taking place in the Meeting Room A, at Benjamin L. Hooks (3030 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38111).
In April 1986, a nuclear accident on a Soviet base, near the city of Chernobyl, became one of the greatest environmental disasters in history. The toxic, radioactive material, directly affected about 116,000 inhabitants of the town, and some 600,000 workers involved in decontaminating the region. Radiation dispersed in areas that included a population of more than 5 million people. Until today, there are no conclusive research or outcomes on the mortality effects of the disaster.
Un traductor is set in Cuba in the late 1980s, adopting a human point of view regarding the Soviet drama. The plot revolves around Malin, a professor of Russian literature who suddenly becomes an interpreter in a hospital in Havana treating patients affected by the atomic disaster.
Although at first, the scholar is reluctant about his new duties as a translator, his worldview is soon transformed by the contact with the most defenseless victims of the catastrophe: sick children due to nuclear radiation.
Malin’s personal life also suffers a significant shift, as the protagonist’s family is also hit by the effects of the tragedy. In parallel, the fall of the Berlin Wall, in 1989, indicates not only the end of the Soviet regime, but the beginning of one of the most important economic crises in the history of Cuba.
Un traductor portrays the beginning of the Cuban economic depression, known as the Special Period, so the individual conflict is the reflection of a major political breakdown. While the energy shortage, scarcity of goods and services severely affects the home, the father seems to collapse at the same time. The Barriuso brothers intertwine with a singular beauty the fatality, affections and private and collective anguish depicting a critical moment of the 20th century.
