Mexican Scientist Ruy Pérez Tamayo Dies At 97

This Thursday, January 27, the doctor and scientist died at the age of 97 Ruy Perez Tamayoprofessor emeritus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and member of El Colegio Nacional.
The above was confirmed by UNAM Faculty of Medicine through a published obituary, where he reported that he joined the sentence that seizes relatives, friends and colleagues of Pérez Tamayo.
Ruy Pérez Tamayo was born in Tamaulipas in 1924. He studied medicine at UNAM, and specialized in pathology with Dr. Isaac Costero, in Mexico, and with doctors Gustave Dammin and Lauren V. Ackerman, in the United States.
He founded and directed for fifteen years the Pathology Unit of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM in the General Hospital of Mexico and for ten years the Department of Pathology of the National Institute of Nutrition.
He was a professor of pathology at the UNAM School of Medicine for more than 50 years, in addition to being an emeritus professor at UNAM and head of the Department of Experimental Medicine of the same school at the General Hospital of Mexico.
He was visiting professor at the Universities of Harvard, John Hopkins, Minnesota, Galveston, Yale, Tel Aviv, Madrid and Lisbon, as well as in Costa Rica, San Salvador, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile and Argentina.
He published more than 160 scientific articles in national and foreign journals and 69 books (18 on scientific topics and 51 on historical and popular science essays); he also contributed to 68 scientific and 134 popular books.
He belonged to 48 national and foreign scientific societies (honorary member in nine of them), in addition to the UNAM Governing Board (1983-1993) and member of the Mexican Academy of Language, of which he was deputy director.

Este jueves 27 de enero falleció a los 91 años de edad el doctor Ruy Pérez Tamayo, profesor emérito de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) y miembro de El Colegio Nacional. La muerte fue confirmada por la Facultad de Medicina de la UNAM a través de una esquela.
Ruy Pérez Tamayo nació en Tamaulipas en 1924. Estudió medicina en la UNAM y se especializó en patología con el Dr. Isaac Costero, en México, y con los doctores Gustave Dammin y Lauren V. Ackerman, en los Estados Unidos. Fue profesor visitante en las Universidades de Harvard, John Hopkins, Minnesota, Galveston, Yale, Tel Aviv, Madrid y Lisboa, así como en Costa Rica, San Salvador, Panamá, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile y Argentina.
Su larga trayectoria se destaca en diversos ámbitos, como la publicación de más de 160 artículos científicos en revistas nacionales y extranjeras, y 69 libros (18 de temas científicos y 51 de ensayos históricos y de divulgación científica). También contribuyó con 68 libros científicos y 134 de divulgación. Perteneció a 48 sociedades científicas nacionales y extranjeras (miembro honorario en nueve de ellas), además de la Junta de Gobierno de la UNAM (1983-1993) y miembro de la Academia Mexicana de la Lengua, de la que fue director adjunto.
Pérez Tamayo obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Ciencias en 1974, el premio Luis Elizondo y el premio Miguel Otero en 1979, el Premio Aida Weiss en 1986, el Premio Rohrer en 1988, el Premio Nacional de Historia y Filosofía de la Medicina en 1995, y la Presea José María Luis Mora en 2002. Además, se le otorgó el doctor honoris causa por varias universidades mexicanas.
