Ronaldo’s United frustrated by Everton

Sports Desk, Oct 2 (EFE).- Cristiano Ronaldo could not lead a blunt Manchester United to victory over Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday, as the first match of the Premier League weekend ended 1-1.

The Portuguese star, who had rescued United against Villarreal in the Champions League in midweek, started on the bench against Rafa Benitez’s side, with Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani starting in Ronaldo’s and Paul Pogba’s place.

Martial repaid manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith in him with the opening goal with a good finish to round off a flowing team move shortly before half-time, one of the few the home team had managed against a disciplined Everton outfit.

The visitors were always a threat on the break, and deservedly equalized midway through the second half when Andros Townsend coolly slotted past David de Gea after excellent work from Damari Gray and Abdoulaye Doucouré on the counter attack.

Everton thought they had scored the winning goal when Tom Davies squared for Yerry Mina, but the Colombian was ruled marginally offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The draw means Everton continue their fine start to the season, while United missed out on the chance to go top of the table. EFE
