Hundreds of journalists demand justice for slain reporter in northern Mexico
Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, Jun 30 (EFE).- Hundreds of journalists marched through the streets of Ciudad Victoria, capital of the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, on Thursday to demand justice for reporter Antonio de la Cruz, who was shot dead the previous day.
The journalists carried banners and shouted slogans such as “The truth is not killed,” “Not one more,” and “Justice for Toño.”
One of the protests was staged by de la Cruz’s colleagues at the local congress.
More than 100 journalists from various regions gathered in the downtown area of the city and began marching towards the government palace.
There, they handed a letter signed by the majority of the protesters to the secretary general of the government of Tamaulipas, Gerardo Peña Flores, in which they demanded a quick resolution of the crime and protection for de la Cruz’s family.
The demonstrators then held a minute of silence in memory of their murdered colleague, followed by a minute of applause.
Other protesters left candles in the square in front of the government palace.
Protests were also held in the south of Tamaulipas. Journalists from this region walked from the Plaza de Armas to Colón Street where they closed the avenue briefly.
De la Cruz was a reporter in the capital of Tamaulipas, a state bordering Texas with a high presence of organized crime groups.
Mexico’s Undersecretary of Security Ricardo Mejía said on Thursday that the authorities were looking for two suspects.
A total of 12 journalists have been murdered in Mexico this year.
International human rights organization Article 19 said that the murder of eight of the journalists was a result of their work.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has denounced “unprecedented” violence against the media in Mexico, which remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world to work in journalism. EFE
