Fuenlabrada player admitted to hospital for Covid-19 checks

A Coruña, Spain, Jul 24 (efe-epa).- A player from Spanish second division football team Fuenlabrada has been admitted to hospital Friday for coronavirus-related tests after at least 12 members of the club tested positive for the virus before an away game on Monday.

In a statement, the club, which represents a southern suburb of the capital Madrid, said the player felt “unwell.”

“It’s not serious, the player is ok, tests are being carried out and he will be placed in observation for the coming days,” it said.

“Please, we ask all media to respect the identity of the person affected,” it added.

Fuenlabrada in a statement Thursday confirmed there were a total of 16 cases at the club, four of which were detected in Madrid and involved individuals who did not travel to Galicia ahead of the game against Deportivo de La Coruña.

The 12 other coronavirus cases only transpired on Monday after the team landed in the northwestern city for the match. They are now quarantining in a hotel in A Coruña.

LaLiga postponed the game but contentiously let all the other fixtures go ahead.

Depor, giants of Spanish football, were relegated to the third-tier, Segunda B, without having a chance to play.

Prosecutors in A Coruña on Friday said they would launch a fact-finding probe to see whether Fuenlabrada could have committed a crime by failing to notify authorities of coronavirus cases at the club before they traveled from Madrid to Galicia.

“The investigation aims to clarify the facts and determine if they have criminal scope,” judicial sources told Efe.
