Neymar’s PSG contract renewal ‘on track,’ talks ongoing with Mbappé

Paris, Feb 25 (efe-epa).- Paris Saint-Germain’s sporting director Leonardo on Thursday said Neymar Jr.’s contract renewal was on track and although less progress had been made in the club’s attempts to hang onto 22-year-old star Kylian Mbappé, ongoing talks with the player were edging toward a decision.

“A contract is only closed when it is signed, and that is not yet the case,” the man in charge of player transfers at PSG told France Bleu radio, adding that talks with Neymar were “on the right track.”

The attacking duo are two of the most valuable players in the world. A recent study by KPMG Football Benchmark suggested Mbappé was now the most expensive player in the sport, with an estimated value of 185 million euros ($226M), while Neymar’s was around 115 million euros.

The Brazilian famously broke transfer records with his 222-million-euro move from Barcelona to PSG in 2017, but his contract with the Parisian club comes to an end in 2022.

Mbappé arrived at PSG from Monaco for around 180 million euros having won Ligue 1 in the 2016/17 season. At the age of 22, he has already won the league four times — three of those with PSG — as well as the 2018 World Cup in which he scored in the final.

Leonardo said the club was in talks with the highly sought-after Frenchman over his future, although progress seemed to be less advanced than with 29-year-old Neymar.

“We’ve been talking for some time,” he said in the interview. “We’re arriving at that point when we’re going to have to make a decision.”

The sporting director took the opportunity in the interview to dismiss media speculation that Neymar’s recent injuries were linked to his style of life off the pitch, where he is known to enjoy a party.

“He got injured, many others get injured. People talk about his lifestyle, but for a year people have not been able to leave their houses.

“We all know his life, his background, we know he is different, that he seeks these things out to find his balance, but his engagement with the club is faultless.”
